The World’s Coldest Backup Plan
So, what's on my mind?
This week I learned about something called the Svalbard Global Seed Vault. It’s located in the Arctic Circle in Norway—about as far from our sanctuary (and our thermostat settings) as you can get. Deep inside a mountain, scientists have stored millions of seeds from around the world. The idea is simple: if disaster strikes—war, climate catastrophe, or something straight out of a movie—there’s a backup plan. Life can begin again.
In other words, humanity looked at the world and said, “We should probably save some seeds… just in case.” I found myself oddly comforted by that. And then, because I’m a pastor and it’s December, my brain immediately went to Christmas. Because when you think about it, Christmas is God’s version of planting a seed. Not a literal one, of course—although it does involve a stable, hay, and people who smell like animals. But in the birth of Jesus, God planted something small, fragile, and unimpressive by worldly standards. No backup generators. No fortified bunker. No climate-controlled vault. Just a baby. And yet, that tiny beginning carried the future of the world.
The Seed Vault exists because we know how easily things can go wrong. God already knew that. And instead of storing something away in the cold “just in case,” God chose to place hope right in the middle of human life—messy, noisy, and unpredictable. That’s part of what makes Christmas so surprising—and honestly, a little funny. If we were in charge, we’d probably put salvation in a locked facility with warning signs and security codes. God put it in a manger and trusted shepherds to spread the word.
Christmas reminds us that God doesn’t work only through grand displays or fail-safe systems. God works through small beginnings. Through seeds. Through babies. Through ordinary people doing faithful things in ordinary places—like rural churches that have been here for generations, still planting hope in their community.
So as we approach Christmas, maybe the question isn’t whether we’ve built a perfect backup plan for the future. Maybe the question is: What seeds of hope is God planting among us right now? And how can we help them grow? And if nothing else, let this be comforting: even if the world ever needs a seed vault… God already planted the one that matters most.
May God hold you,
Rev Chris Hester
