The Great Thanksgiving Mix-Up
So, what's on my mind?
I recently read that the very first TV dinner was actually created because of a Thanksgiving mistake! In 1953, the folks at Swanson ordered way too many frozen turkeys—260 tons too many to be exact. Not knowing what to do with all those birds, a salesman suggested they slice the turkey, add some sides, and package it in little aluminum trays. And there you have it, the TV dinner was born. And families across America suddenly had a new way to gather around the table… well, around the television.
This story about the Swanson mix-up made me smile. A huge mistake—hundreds of tons of turkey sitting in freezers—turned into one of the most iconic American inventions. What began as an “Uh-oh, someone is in trouble” moment became a blessing to busy families everywhere.
It makes me wonder how many times in my own life God has used what I thought was a mistake, or a disappointment, or a wrong turn as the seed for something unexpectedly good. Scripture is full of these moments. Joseph says to his brothers—the same brothers who sold him into slavery—“You meant evil against me, but God meant it for good” (Genesis 50:20). Paul reminds us that “in all things God works for the good of those who love him” (Romans 8:28). Notice it doesn’t say all things are good, just that God can work good out of them.
Maybe that’s our quiet invitation of Thanksgiving this year: to look back not only at the obvious blessings but also at the “mistakes” God has turned into mercy. Maybe it’s the plans that changed. Or the path that zig-zagged. Or the freezer full of “extra turkeys” we didn’t know what to do with…until God surprised us.
As we gather around our tables, or maybe even our TV trays (no judgment), may we have eyes to see the hidden blessings that came in unexpected ways. And may we trust that God is still doing that work in us, through us, and around us.
May God hold you,
Rev Chris Hester

Wait… That’s a Classic?
‘Tis the season for Christmas movies—the classics. You know: It’s a Wonderful Life, White Christmas, Miracle on 34th Street… and apparently now… Elf?
