School’s Out

So, what's on my mind?

It’s that time of year again—backpacks are being emptied and kids (and teachers!) are either racing or crawling toward that final bell. And yes, just like clockwork, I’ve had Alice Cooper’s rock anthem “School’s Out” stuck in my head all week. It’s a song that perfectly captures the wild freedom of the season—no more pencils, no more books, no more… well, you know the rest.

But here’s the twist. Every time I hear that song—or think about Alice Cooper in general—I’m reminded of one of my favorite examples of “don’t judge a book by its cover.” Despite his stage persona of mascara, leather, and fake guillotines, Alice Cooper (whose real name is Vincent Furnier) is a devout Christian who’s spoken openly about his faith and his journey of sobriety. He teaches Sunday school. He supports outreach ministries. And he once said, “Drinking beer is easy. Trashing your hotel room is easy. But being a Christian—that’s a tough call. That’s real rebellion.” Now that’s a plot twist.

It just goes to show—God works through all kinds of people. Sometimes the loudest voices for grace come from the most unexpected places. Summer might be a time when routines change, but God’s presence doesn’t take a vacation. Whether you’re flipping burgers, catching fireflies, or even blasting classic rock with the windows down, God’s still showing up—in sandals and eyeliner.

So as we kick off the season of sunscreen and summer break, may we stay open to the unexpected ways God speaks—through music, through people, and maybe even through a head-banging anthem that reminds us that freedom is a gift… and so is the One who truly sets us free. And you’re welcome for getting that song stuck in your head.

May God hold you,

Rev Chris Hester
