Finally! A Bulldog Becomes a Falcon
So, what's on my mind?
This past weekend, the NFL draft gave Georgia football fans something they haven’t seen in over 50 years: the Atlanta Falcons used their first-round pick on a Georgia Bulldog. Jalon Walker’s selection marks the first time since 1967 that a Bulldog has gone this high to the hometown team. For fans of both UGA and the Falcons (and I know some of y’all are), it feels like the stars finally aligned.
Now, I’m not saying the Bible has anything directly to say about football drafts—but it does have a lot to say about identity, belonging, and calling. For years, Bulldog fans have watched their favorite players head off to other NFL teams—like watching your own kids get drafted by the neighbors. And Falcons fans have wondered why the hometown team never seems to bring one of their own on board. That’s why this draft pick feels so satisfying. It’s not just a great player—it feels like home recognizing home.
In the Bible, there are moments like that too—when someone is finally seen for who they are and called to something meaningful. Think about David, the youngest of Jesse’s sons, overlooked until God made it clear: “The Lord looks at the heart” (1 Samuel 16:7). Or Jesus calling his disciples, many of whom were local fishermen—not the expected choices, but just the right people for the mission.
We all long to be chosen—not for fame or football—but to be known, valued, and called into something that matters. The good news of the gospel is that God does call us—right where we are, as we are. God doesn’t wait for perfect stats or standout résumés. He calls shepherds and fishermen, students and retirees, lifelong Christians and new believers alike. He sees the heart, the potential, and the promise.
So, whether you’re celebrating a long-awaited draft pick or just wondering if your work and witness matter—take heart. In God’s kingdom, you’ve already been chosen. You’re not overlooked. You’re part of the plan. And hey, maybe this is finally the year the Falcons soar. (Miracles do happen.)
May God hold you,
Rev Chris Hester
