Does Not Carry Burritos

So, what's on my mind?

Have you ever noticed some of the warning labels on products and wondered, “Who in the world would try that?” I was behind a Chipotle tractor trailer the other day that had this printed on the back: “DRIVERS DO NOT CARRY BURRITOS.” Apparently, someone was once disappointed enough to ask. Or take this gem from a jet ski: “NEVER USE A LIT MATCH OR OPEN FLAME TO CHECK FUEL LEVEL.” Somewhere, sometime, somebody thought, “This seems like a good idea.”

We laugh at these labels, but the truth is, they exist because someone actually did the thing. They’re not trying to insult our intelligence—they’re trying to protect us from ourselves. It struck me that God’s Word works in a similar way. The Bible is filled with what sometimes sound like “obvious” instructions: Don’t have other gods before me. Don’t covet. Don’t gossip. Love your neighbor. We might think, Of course! Who would do that?

Well… humanity would. And humanity does. Over and over again.

That’s why God gives us these reminders—not to spoil our fun, but because He knows how easily we wander into trouble. The commandments, the teachings of Jesus, even the warnings from Paul—all of them are God’s way of saying, “I love you enough to set guardrails for your good.”

So the next time you see a ridiculous warning label, maybe let it remind you that God gives us His own “labels” out of love. And thankfully, unlike the Chipotle truck driver, we actually do get to carry the burritos.

May God hold you,
Rev Chris Hester

Wait… That’s a Classic?

‘Tis the season for Christmas movies—the classics. You know: It’s a Wonderful Life, White Christmas, Miracle on 34th Street… and apparently now… Elf?
